With over 4,000 sea creatures, the National Marine Aquarium is a world class attraction and is located at the entrance to Plymouth’s historic harbour, neighbouring the seafood restaurant Rockfish. Luckily, Sutton Harbour has a fantastic range of venues offering something for everyone along its cobbled streets, including the UK’s largest aquarium, the National Marine Aquarium. It is an hour well spent. While we look forward to spring and summer arriving in the next few months, it can be difficult to find fun things to do with the family during the wet and cold seasons. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting HB. You could not social distance at all, though most people were wearing masks and there is a warning before you go in that distancing is not possible, so fair enough. It is well used and designed to maximize the experience, but during the pandemic, we felt like it almost had too many people in such a limited area. The single drawback to this is the size of the space. My wife and I and our kids (10 and 6) all leaned a lot, had fun and left with a better understanding and respect of the local ecosystem. Got to touch a couple of different shark jaws and a whale rib they have a megladon tooth on display! There is much, much more on display, both living and deceased. You get to touch several different kinds of lobsters and crabs (we saw one who had molted the previous day and saw both his old covering and what he looked like as he developed his new one!). The price was very reasonable, the biologist who lead the talk was friendly, knowledgeable and great with kids, and the amount of experience they pack into a very small space is incredible. This was one of the best things we did while we stayed at Hampton Beach as a family. So this is not available in fall and winter. We were both very impressed by how much was packed into a small facility! Highly recommend, especially if you want a hands on experience!įYI- we were told at the ticket counter that they are open Memorial Day thru Labor day. It was fun to learn more about the wildlife in the area, especially things you may encounter on the beach! The animals are released back into the wild at the end of summer. They are caught and brought in by local fishermen.

I thought the animals were very safe and cared for during the whole visit.Īll the animals and items on display are native to the local ocean area.

The staff was able to encourage several small children to get past their fears and enjoy handling some weird little sea creatures.

They kept a close eye on everyone at the touch tanks and would help someone pick up an animal if they weren't sure how to do it, or intervene if someone was starting to handle one of the animals improperly. I appreciated that they first instructed us on the proper way to safely handle the animals so they wouldn't be hurt or stressed.

There's a lot of hands-on items (such as bones, teeth, and baleen) in the exhibit in addition to the creatures in the touch tanks. Everyone was happy to answer our questions. Ellen the marine biologist was very friendly and knowledgeable, and the young staff members were too. I (adult almost 30) visited with my mom while spending the weekend at Hampton beach.
